A customized route for connoisseurs of sophisticated train travel in one of
the world’s most scenic countries.
Day 1 Zurich - Lucerne
Independent arrival in Zurich. Board your
Swiss Federal Railways train for Lucerne, an hours ride along Lake Zurich,
and the Sihl River gorge and through cow pastures. Afternoon at leisure
in Lucerne. Overnight: Lucerne, Hotel Cascada (or similar)
Day 2 Lucerne
(Optional excursion to Mount Pilatus) This morning,
board any lake steamer or motor launch for Alpnachstad. Climb aboard the
steepest cogwheel railway in world for the 7000 ft. high Mount Pilatus
(optional). At the top explore the walkways rendering views of Lake Lucerne,
the Alps and as far as the Black Forest. After lunch, descend by cable
car via Kriens. If time permits, visit the Swiss Transportation Museum
this afternoon. Overnight: Lucerne, Hotel Cascada (or similar)
Day 3 Lucerne - Lugano
by William Tell Express Mid-morning departure
by the refurbished lake steamer “William Tell”. Luncheon is served while
heading for Fluelen where your train for Lugano is waiting for you. Overnight:
Lugano, Hotel International au Lac (or similar)
Day 4 Lugano - St.Moritz
(by Bernina Express) Morning departure
by Swiss Postal bus by way of Northern Italy (Passport required). In Tirano
switch to the famous Bernina Express bound for St. Moritz. Numerous spiral
tunnels and switchbacks conquer the 6100 feet of elevation. Overnight:
St. Moritz, Hotel Soldanella (or similar)
Day 5 St Moritz
(at leisure) Today is at leisure. Take advantage
of excursions available to Muottas Muragl for an exciting trip on a funicular,
or a special train trip to Pontresina, a charming Engadine village. Or,
simply relax and explore the town of St. Moritz. Overnight: St. Moritz,
Hotel Soldanella (or similar)
Day 6 St.Moritz - Zermatt
(by Glacier Express Today is arguably
the highlight of this spectacular rail vacation. Board the famous fire
hydrant red panorama carriages of the Glacier Express (operated by the
Rhaetian Railway Company. The tracks follow the Rhine River, before ascending
sharply towards Andermatt. Lunch is served at your seat or in the dining
car. Continue through the Goms Valley, Brig and onto Zermatt. The trip
takes 7 hours, and crosses over 291 bridges and through 91 tunnels. Overnight:
Zermatt, Hotel Butterfly (or similar).
Day 7 Zermatt
(at leisure) Full day at leisure, time for taking
the cogwheel train to Gornergrat (optional) for stunning views of the
Matterhorn. Another favorite is hiking to a nearby country restaurant
for lunch. Overnight: Hotel Butterfly (or similar).
Day 8 Zermatt - Geneva or Zurich Airport
Take any train from
Zermatt to Geneva or Zurich Airport for your flight back to the States.
