Sicily by Train

Day 1 ARRIVAL PALERMO
Independent arrival in Palermo. Private car transfer from the airport to your hotel. Balance of the day at leisure in Palermo.

Day 2 PALERMO
Full day city sightseeing tour of Palermo by Hop-on Hop-off motorcoach including the Politeama Theater, Piazza Quattro Canti and nearby Vucciria Market, the Royal Palace, Flea Market and Cathedral. The afternoon tour includes the English Garden, Villa Malfitano and Zisa Castle, the Mercato del Capo and Massimo Theater, Palermo’s port and Politeama Square.

Day 3 PALERMO – AGRIGENTO
In the morning depart by train from Palermo to Agrigento (2 ½ hours). Afternoon self-guided tour of the Valley of the Temples. The Greeks built here at least 8 Temples, only Athens built more. View the well preserved Temple of Concord, the older Temple of Hera and Templo di Giove, or the Olympian Zeus. At night the temples are illuminated and may be viewed from the Viale della Vittoria in town.

Day 4 AGRIGENTO – CATANIA - SIRACUSA
A 3 ½ hour train ride thru the characteristic country side of Sicily brings us to the 2nd largest city of Sicily, Catania. While waiting for the train to Siracusa, there is time exploring major Baroque Buildings along tree-line boulevards such as Viale XX Settembre, stop at the Piazza del Duomo and Teatro Romano. Late afternoon train (1 hour) to Siracusa. Explore the ancient island of Ortygia connected to the “new” city by a bridge. Admire the baroque palazzo and churches.

Day 5 SIRACUSA
This morning is set aside for a self-guided visit to Archaeological Park with its Roman Amphitheater, Greek Theater, Altar of Zeus the Liberator and Ear of Dionysus known for its shape and acoustical properties. Nearby are the Archaeological Museum and the Catacombs of San Giovanni.

Day 6 SIRACUSA - TAORMINA
After a 2 ½ hour train ride arrive at Taormina-Giardini Station. From there a cable car leads to the town perched on the hillside. This afternoon time discovering this charming town overlooking the Sea of Naxos and Mount Aetna. The Amphitheater, still in use, provides superb vantage points for photographers.

Day 7 TAORMINA – CATANIA
Private car transfer from your hotel directly to Catania Airport to connect with your flight.
