Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a charming Bavarian Town well known for hosting the Winter Olympic Games of 1936 and now World Cup races and the New Year ski jumping event. There are 5 mountains in all; several are interconnected as well as Glacier skiing on the Zugspitze. Skiers congregate at the Zugspitze (9000ft) and the Garmisch Happy Ski Card permits skiing also in Austria with a total of 158 miles of ski runs. Snowboarders are welcome at the snowboard center at the Zugspitze and also in the classic ski areas.
Where to go and what to see:
Alpine handicraft, especially the wood carved figures are popular in this
area. Shopping on Ludwigstrasse and Kurpark is a pleasure. 90 miles of
well-marked winter hiking trails invite walking in this winter wonderland.
Innsbruck and Munich are connected by direct trains
